Our day at Tropical Birdland

At the weekend we decided to take a little trip to Tropical Birdland in the village of Desford in Leicestershire. The 6.5 acre park is a sanctuary for over 250 parrots and exotic birds from all over the world including toucans, macaws, cockatoos, owls and free flying parrots.
It cost us £8.50 for the adults and £5.75 for the children, under 4’s go free and it is open from 10am – 5.30pm. Birdland was opened by Richard Hooper back in 1984, he has even hand-reared birds from endangered species with a successful breeding programme.
What Mini Me and Lacey both loved was that there were such a wide variety of birds to interact with and hold – you can buy food to feed them too, the children are both 6 and this was the perfect day out for them. The staff were ever so friendly and knowledgeable. The Parrot Path is a great place to get up close and personal with the birds – some of the parrots are free-flying.
The outdoor play area is lovely, having been updated a few years ago, as is the cafe area. There is a walk-through aviary where you can get a really good look at all of the birds and a lovely outdoor woodland walk where you can try and spot kingfishers and woodpeckers.
In the Chick Room you will get to see all the newborn chicks, if you’re lucky some might just have hatched, these can be viewed through large windows.
The park is pushchair and wheelchair friendly and there is also a gift shop.
We had a great day out and would really recommend a visit if you are in the local area.

It looks like a lovely place to take the kids. So much fun that they get to be so up close to them, love the photos.
This looks like a fabulous day out – loving the pic of your son with the parrot on his shoulder
I love that you can get so close and feed the birds. This would be a perfect day out for my animal-mad son
What a gorgeous place, I have not heard of Tropical Birdland before but know my nephew would love it big time.
Sounds like a fun family day out! Will have to check it out if ever in the area!
Looks like you had lots of fun. Birds are so beautiful.
OMG, that looks like my worst nightmare! I’m terrified of birds. I can see how it would be cool though if you’re okay with bird sitting on you.
That looks a brilliant day out, it’s not too far from us so may take a visit.
