Baby Box Co
Minime and Luxury were delighted to talk to Sophie from The Baby Box Co about their fantastic baby boxes and below is more information.
Baby Boxes are traditionally used in Finland as a baby’s bed in the first few months of life. Made from thick cardboard, they include a foam mattress, waterproof mattress cover and cotton sheet.
The use of Baby Boxes, which serve as infant sleep spaces and parenting starter kits in one, have been associated with helping Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates. The Finnish initiative, which enables every expecting woman in the country to claim a free Baby Box once she receives prenatal care and parenting information from a healthcare professional, is credited with helping to decrease Finland’s infant mortality rate from 65 deaths for each 1,000 children born in 1938 to 2.26 deaths per 1,000 births in 2015.
Oftentimes the media misrepresents the Baby Box tradition as a one-stop-shop solution, equating simple provision of a bed box with improvements in maternal and child health outcomes. What Finland’s positive results actually demonstrate is the significance of parenting education, engaging prenatal intervention and accessible community supports. Every mother in Finland must visit a healthcare professional by her second trimester to receive a check-up and vital education before being eligible to claim the free Baby Box.
Our programme is designed to pay homage to the Finnish model by providing safe-sleep Baby Boxes to all expecting and new parents in trusts/communities where the local healthcare experts collaborate to develop and implement an education programme on Baby Box University, offering all babies the same start in life.
